Why Markets May Fail to Generate Socially Desirable Outcomes
Discuss why markets may fail to generate socially desirable outcomes. The term market refers to the group of consumers (households, firms or government) that is interested in product or service and has the resources to purchase that product. Acquiring the product and/or getting a service are always permitted by law and other regulations. The market definition begins with the total population and progressively narrows as show in the following diagram. Market definition Conceptual diagram The size of the market is not fixed and depends on the product price. It is increasing while increasing the prices and decreasing while decreasing the prices. In addition, qualified markets can be increased through changes in legislationâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Interests of consumers and suppliers are harmonized - brought into equilibrium. In this model, prices are determined impersonally in the market and this secures the equality between those demanding the good and those supplying the good. Neoclassical model examines the commodity prices influences by grouping them into two categories; side of supply (such as: right kind of labour, raw materials, machinery, power and the used technology) and side of demand (such as: influences affecting consumer demand e.g. income, lifestyle, age, and the social conventions and expectations) Neoclassical model can reflect one of the causes to market failure; Asymmetric information. It represents the lack of relevant information. The people can not make maximizing decisions if they are poorly informed about the things they are buying or selling. Neoclassical model main weakness is that it models the competitive outcome, i.e. equilibrium, rather than the competitive process. In this point people will never have complete information when responding to economic changes. F.A. Hayek is representing the third theoretical perspective of the competitive market. He admire the basic idea of the Neoclassical model (perfect competition) pointing out its main weakness; lack of emphasis on the process of competitive price information (Neoclassical emphasizing the equilibrium outcome different perspective than Hayek). They can fail to organise economic activity in a socially desirable fashion. Markets failure are due to social inefficiency and inequity. The Economic Problem Essay/Romania free essay sample
Central planner decided about what to produce, how to produce may vary according to political agenda, the products are make for the people who is most in need. At the start of World War ?. Romania proclaimed its neutrality but it still was invaded, about 270,000 Jews were massacred in Fascist Romania. People were not satisfied the country so it lead to the economic problem: unlimited wants + limited resources = scarcity. Then king Carol ? dissolved parliament, granted the new prime minister, Lon Antonescu, full power, abdicated his throne, and went into exile. So the country started to be controlled by the prime minister, and the economy went back to the traditional economy from the command economy. With time passing by, Romania has experienced many armies and in 1995 Romania joined the Warsaw Treaty Organization and the United Nations. This national objective may help itââ¬â¢s economy change in some ways. Romania has been very well in these years. We will write a custom essay sample on The Economic Problem Essay/Romania or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Their economy has a large increase and the citizens lived comfortable than before. During 1967 to 1989, Nicolae Ceausescu turned the country from a moderately prosperous into one at the brink of starvation. He uses $10 billion to pay his own debt. From this we can see the economic problem about opportunity cost. He forgoes the better life and better future of Romania. Then from 1995 the post-communist governmentsââ¬â¢ conflicted and halfhearted attempts to change to a free market economy: . From the graph we can see the country changes to the mixed economy from the command economy. But because of the governmentââ¬â¢s inefficiencies the society didnââ¬â¢t change into what they want and cause many problems, especially social unrest, citizens didnââ¬â¢t agree with the government, the economy went back to the command economy. In 2004 Romania has a great chance. Romania joined NATO and in 2005 the EU approved the entry of Romania in 2007. The international organization can help the country. The globalization is the most important part. This can bring Romania free trade and specialization and technology. The GDP is $124,7billion in 2007 and $139,8 in 2008 which growth 7,3% in 2008. Globalization can bring foreign investments to Romania because Romania needs foreign investments to satisfy peopleââ¬â¢s unlimited wants, and this all can help the country growth in itââ¬â¢s economy. With globalization the country can satisfy unlimited wants and it can also minimize resource wastage which can mean maximizing efficiency. We can show it on the PPC graph . The PPC graph is the production possibility frontier (PPC) it is a graph that all of the combinations of goods and services that can be produced if all of societys resources are used efficiently. But Romania doesnââ¬â¢t have too much money to afford the change. We can show it on this graph . The economy wants to move from A to B. The economy changes to mixed economy again. Several years later In 2009 Romania has social unrest. Citizens donââ¬â¢t agree with the government and it makes the government in turmoil. In November 2009 the government forgoes the choice of Lucian Croitoru stayed in the office but choose the BOC quickly introduced stringent budget cuts and vowed to address the countrys financial crisis. This is the opportunity cost. Opportunity cost is the value of the best alternative given up by a decision to do something else. It caused by the choice among alternatives, and the basic reason is scarcity, and we have to choose the best alternative. Scarcity arises because resources are limited but wants are unlimited. The Romania has many chance to change into the mixed economy not keep present situation but the government didnââ¬â¢t help the country in a good way to change. This graph can show: . When it in the point 1 it is command economy the government control the economy, Romania starts in this point and many times backs here. Point 2 is both command economy and mixed economy but the command economy is more than mixed economy, Romania is mostly in this point. Then point 3 is mixed economy Romania tried many times to reach this point but all failed. The fourth point is mixed and market economy, mixed is more than market, the fifth point is market economy. This two point Romania never reach it. The government makes many mistakes so the countryââ¬â¢s economy could just stay in the command economy and the citizens canââ¬â¢t get their wants because of the governmentââ¬â¢s wrong lead and the limited resources. At last Romania just keep the command economy.

The Deft Touch Of Catch 22 Essays - Catch-22, Black Comedy
The Deft Touch of Catch 22: Heller's Harmonious Unison of Comedy and Tragedy Since the dawn of literature and drama, comedy and tragedy have always been partitioned into separate genres. Certainly most tragedies had comedic moments, and even the zaniest comedies were at times serious. However, even the development of said tragicomedies left the division more or less intact. Integrating a total comedy and a total tragedy into a holistic union that not only preserved both features, but also blended them into a new and harmonious entity remained elusive. That is, until Catch-22. Using his unique style and structure, Joseph Heller masterfully manages to interlay humor and terror, comedy and tragedy, and reveals in the process the perversions of the human character and of society gone mad. The first stroke of Heller's deft touch is his presentation of outrageous characters, acting outrageously. From the first chapter, we are presented with a slew of unbelievable characters whose actions and ideologies are uproariously funny, and horrifically disturbing. In fact, the manner in which the reader recognizes the character's dual nature will serve as the first example of Heller's amalgamation of comedy and tragedy. Dunbar's theory of life is first received with a burst of laughter from the audience. Life is short, and Dunbar wishes to extend it as much as possible. If time flies when one is having fun, then conversely, time must slow when one is bored. Dunbar endeavors to make his life as boring as possible, thus increasing the length of its passing. Indeed, it is understandable why such an attitude should elicit a laugh, but the further implications are horrific. Society's emphasis on life over meaning comes as a shocking revelation to the audience. Heller further reinforce s that idea with characters such as Doc Daneeka, who values self-preservation and money over responsibility and friendship, and Milo who values self-improvement and fortune over the lives of thousands of others. The motif that follows gives us characters that are, above all else, more interested in self (Cathcart, Mrs. Daneeka, Duckett, the Old Man, Peckem, etc.). Though they are initially humorous, their nature is ultimately revealed to be false and horrific, arousing disgust and pity, a brilliant combination of comedy and tragedy. The perversion of society is revealed further in a second major type of character, the deluded. Though most serve largely as foils to Yossarian and his philosophy, much can still be made of their condition. Clevinger is perhaps the best example of a deluded character. His debate with Yossarian serves as an insightful evaluation of their psyche. He argues that, although everyone is trying to kill him, everyone is not trying to kill him. The humor of the debate cannot be denied, but horror and tragedy are equally present. The debate leaves the audience struggling to decide who is crazy. Clevinger falls into an obvious contradiction, but his argument still strikes as common sense. In face of Yossarian's triumphant What difference does that make? the audience is left not only with the realization of its speciousness, but of the realization that they believed it. The terror evoked by the deluded lies mainly in that the audience is equally deluded. Perhaps Clevinger, Appleby, and Havermeye r are fighting for what they have been told was their country-- and perhaps so has the audience. The genius of Heller's characterization is further enhanced as the audience sees itself in the hollow rationale of the deluded, and is aghast with horror, even in face of such humor. With this revelation, Heller compels the audience to follow the rebellious path of Yossarian, or fall victim to the indoctrination of society, and meet the same fate as the deluded. As the audience is bombarded with insanely comedic ironies of Catch-22, they are further aware of its horror. A primary example of irony is found in Milo, when he is praised for bombing his own company when it is learned that he made a great deal of money. Again, this evokes a staunch laugh, and then leaves the audience aghast with horror. Exaggeration makes this funny-- an event such as this occurring, and then inciting such a reaction by those affected is almost unfathomable-- but the ultimate truth provides the terror. Society truly does

Film Analysis/ High And Low Essays - Japanese-language Films, Films
Film Analysis/ High And Low Film 1010 Mise en scene is a stylistic form of filming that is French for staging the shot, which is referring to everything in front of the camera. Director Kurosawa understood this style and used it in High and Low (Kurosawa, 1962). He used several Mise en scene techniques such as closed composition, space manipulation, and lighting to compliment the crime thriller story. Closed composition is one of the main themes that Kurosawa uses throughout the movie. He chooses to keep the scenes tight and in close quarters mostly. This is seen predominately in the first half on the movie. Here the action takes place in Mr. Gondos house on top of a hill. The viewer has very little idea that there is much of a world outside the house. This idea is supported when Mr. Gondo has to close all the drapes in the house to prevent the kidnapper from looking into the house. This gives a mood and feeling of anxiety from being enclosed. Also, shots of the house sitting on top of the hill give the feeling of loneliness. This feeling is repeated in the bullet train sequence where the quarters are much smaller. The viewer is somewhat relieved with the view of the outside, but because of the close quarters and the sense of a speeding train, it does not allow the viewer to enjoy the openness the windows provide. A scene that clearly shows the Mise en scene style is the next day comes and Mr. Gondo must now decide whether to pay the ransom or not. We see and hear the argument with Mr. Gondo and Mrs. Gondo, with Mr. Aoki crying to the far left of the scene. Soon the dialog ends and we see Mr. Aoki still to the far left, Mrs. Gondo with Jun in the middle, and Mr. Gondo to the far right. Clearly separating them are the detectives who are standing silently with their heads down. The placement of the detectives manipulates the space in the scene into thirds. It also helps in emphasizing the differences between the three characters regarding what should be done about getting Mr. Aokis son back from the kidnapper. In the scene where two of the detectives find the man and woman dead, we see the detectives enclosed in the window of the house where, we the viewers are looking in. This is the closed form composition, which is used to help focus the viewers attention on the characters. In doing so, the characters surprise reactions to finding the accomplices dead are emphasized. Also the low lighting inside the house gives the film a tone of gloom. This helps set the scene to follow where the detectives give off the feeling of desperation. This technique of framing the characters expression is used again in the scene at the hospital. In the hospital scene, the detectives reaction is again framed in a window inside the hospital. Here his surprise and excitement is quickly brought to the viewers attention. At the same time, the two detectives closest to the viewers, frame the window that frames the detective inside the window, which seems to enforce the excitement aspect in the scene. The most simplistic way that Kurosawa uses the mise en scene is in the disco bar. He uses the arrangement of objects, space manipulation, as well as lighting to catch the eye of the viewer. Here we see a young Japanese girl who enters the bar and goes to the jukebox. But the viewers attention is still drawn to the criminal, Ginji Takeuchi, who is sitting at the bar. But when the girl reaches the jukebox and puts in money to play a selection, the viewers attention is diverted to her. This is because she is now framed by two disco ball-like polls that are glittering and shining from the dance lights from above. The space manipulation comes from the fact that the polls which she is standing between help separate her from all the action coming from the extras, who are dancing on the dance floor, as well as the criminal who is still sitting at the bar. You could also say that the dancers

Starting Your Novel Start Your Author Platform Now - Freewrite Store
Starting Your Novel Start Your Author Platform Now - Freewrite Store Todayââ¬â¢s guest post is by Zara Altairà (@ZaraAltair), writer of The Argolicus Mysteries set in ancient Italy.à Zara also coaches budding writers to create winning stories asà The Story Bodyguardà from her home near Portland, Oregon. Itââ¬â¢s Never Too Early To Build and Promote In the world of publishing you as an author become a brand. You become a business, an author business, and you need to enter a business mindset. To promote your new author brand, you need a place to do that- your author platform. If you are starting a new novel and you think your fabulous, creative, innovative, engaging, exciting story will sell itself, welcome to reality. It wonââ¬â¢t sell itself. You may dream of people reading your book and sharing their enjoyment with others. Before that happens, readers need to know about your novel. The best way to get started letting others know about your novel is through your author platform. Your book will compete with thousands of other books. You need to entice and win your readers to select your book out of the thousands of books out there. If you write in a popular genre, you need to differentiate your story from your competitors. Your author platform is the way you connect with your readers and fans. Provide information about you, the author, and your books on your platform. Why Now? First, if you wait until your novel is completed, or even later until it is published, you miss the chance to connect not only with readers, but with people in the publishing world. Agents want to see your platform before they represent your book. Many agents will not accept a book unless you have a platform designed and in place. You will co-promote with a traditional publisher. The reason the agent wants to see your author platform is that publishers want to know you put energy into promoting your book(s). If you are self-publishing, you will spend time weekly if not daily promoting your work. Creating your author marketing platform takes time. As you grow in experience with your platform, youââ¬â¢ll tweak and tweak again to create the most concise and enticing connection with you, the author. How To Start Your Author Platform The best way to start is with you, the author. Youââ¬â¢ll need several author bios to distribute and a professional portrait. These bios will go on your website, social media introductions, press releases, digital publishing author pages (Amazon, Nook, iBooks, etc.), inside your book, on your dust jacket. Youââ¬â¢ll need them handy whenever you promote yourself and your books. Book Description Write a description of your book. You will probably revise this many times, but write one. Pretend you are writing the blurb for the back cover. Your book description is not a synopsis of the story. You want targeted readers of your genre to want to buy your book and read it. Tell potential readers the genre up front. Zombie Apocalypse readers wonââ¬â¢t read your sweet romance.à Focus on the main character and their challenge. Load your book description with emotional phrases that entice readers to buy your book. Think of your book description as a sales tool to get your readers to connect. Your Author Biographies Yes, youââ¬â¢ll need at least three author bios. Also, youââ¬â¢ll find yourself editing these bios for guest posts, author interviews, and other publicity. Start witha short one, 25-30 words, to post at the end of articles or on social media that does not allow for a long description, like Twitter. Then write at least two more, a 100-word bio and a 300-word bio. If you hire a publicist, or do your own publicity, you may want a 1000 word biography. You will rewrite these many times, but start with something now. A Photo: Your Professional Image Create a formal portrait of yourself both color and black and white. You can do this yourself with a plain background or hire a professional photographer. A formal portrait has a plain background with no distractions, so the focus is on you. Cover Image for Your Book Your book cover and book description are two key elements in book sales. You may think itââ¬â¢s too early to create a cover image, but it will be part of your promotion. Even before the book is out, youââ¬â¢ll want to entice readers.Youââ¬â¢ll want this for your website and any promotions you may do. Donââ¬â¢t do this yourself. Your book cover is one of the strongest selling elements. Hire a professional book cover designer. Your cover design can range in price from pre-made where your insert your author name and book title for $25-$50 to a high-end professional who may charge $500 or more. Donââ¬â¢t skimp. Save your pennies to get the best designer you can afford. This is one reason to start early. Youââ¬â¢ll spend time finding the right designer for your book cover. Create A Free Giveaway Create a giveaway for readers who join your email list. This can be a short novella, a chapter from your book, background about the theme of your story, or a biography of the main character. Use your imagination to create something special for your followers. Reward them for following you. Create Your Author Website Your author website is your home base. If Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or your publisher go out of business, youââ¬â¢ll still own your website. You can use free website services like WordPress.com or Weebly to get started. Or you can go one step up with a paid service like Squarespace. If you have time and resources, you can become more involved and intricate with a self-hosted website using WordPress.org. You will need to monitor and update the self-hosted website for updates or hire someone to manage the site for you. If you have a large budget, you can hire a website designer to create the site for you. Make sure you have access to add and change text. Basic pages for your website: An introduction to you as an author. Your bio and some words about why you are writing the book. A page just for the book. Give potential readers a taste of the book with the book description and a short excerpt. Once your book is published, you will add links to where readers can buy your book. A blog page. Most free and paid website services include a blog page. Update this with articles regularly, at least once a month if not more. The key is to consistently communicate with readers. Email - The Way to Stay in Touch with Readers However much you may like social media and hate a full email inbox, email is the number one way to stay in touch with your readers. Email is not dead. Youââ¬â¢ll communicate in a personal way and respond to questions. So, set up your email functionality now. Even if the first subscribers are your mom and your best friend. Getting your email service set up now will save you time in the future as your list grows. There are several services (autoresponders) that provide email list services. To begin, you can start with a free service like MailChimp. As your list grows, consider a paid service such as AWeber. Set up your email list. Add yourself to the list to check that all your emails go out. Write a sequence of welcoming emails for your autoresponder. Create your invitation to join the list (landing page). Entice people to join with your free giveaway you created. Keep it simple and direct. Write Your Friendly Email Sequence Create a sequence of emails to go to people who join your list. Write a sequence of welcoming emails for your autoresponder. Hereââ¬â¢s a sample email welcome sequence and timing: Day One: Thank your new subscriber. Introduce yourself and your books. Link to the free giveaway. Three days after previous: Did you miss the download? Insert the link to your free giveaway again. Keep it short and sweet. Three days after previous. More about how you wrote the book(s). Add your social media connection links and Amazon Author page and website. Invite your subscribers to follow you. One week after previous. A bit about you. Personal what I do. Pets. Activities, Photos of life. Invitation to read one of your books with link. One week after that. Invitation for free books forever by joining the beta readers group, advanced readers. Set up a separate email list for them and put the link in this message. Once again, set up your autoresponder with at least one welcoming message thanking them for their enthusiasm and telling them they will be receiving their advance copy when it is ready. You know how to do this now. Your Author Newsletter Use your email service to send out a newsletter to your fans regularly. Set a schedule and stick to it. Some authors write every day others send out the newsletter once a month. The frequency isnââ¬â¢t as important as the consistency. Each issue of your newsletter keeps your fans engaged. Most email services have an RSS feed service to bring your blog posts into your newsletter. If you write a regular blog, your subscribers will have a link to all the blog posts since your last newsletter. Start your newsletter right away, even if itââ¬â¢s only your mom and best friend on your list. Get yourself in the habit of creating and sending your newsletter. Set your newsletter writing date on your calendar. Set your publication date on your calendar. Youââ¬â¢ll develop the habit of consistent communication. Social Media Social media is a great way to increase your exposure. Each platform like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+, and others each has a distinct audience. The Problem of Authority in the Continental Reformers Assignment
The Problem of Authority in the Continental Reformers - Assignment Example Luther's detestations towards the power of the Catholic Church and the' legitimacy of the Pope's indulgences, for instance, were marked by the dictates of his belief in political realism which was coupled with the 'ethical consequences of his doctrines' (Davies 37. Scholars contend that Luther was an 'accomplished theologian politician' whose struggles were 'inner' and spiritual yet, he likewise took controversial political stands in order to defend his goals of religious reformation. This clearly depicts Luther's ambivalent position on religion and politics. Luther asserted that men needed the restrictions that laws provide and advocated absolute obedience to authority while upholding spiritual freedom (New 34). This contention on absolute obedience is dubious since Luther decried the same absolutism brought about by the 'indulgences' of the Pope. Furthermore, his overly passionate stance on the foreigners' exploitation of Germany evoked hostile resentment against the foreigners, as well as patriotism and indignation from the Germans (New 35). For many liberals and humanists in that period, Luther's type of reformation was fundamental - overly passionate and almost bordering on rebellion. John Calvin employed the same kind of radicalism in order to alter the political and social environments of his day. Fashioning social and political organizations completely from biblical principles, Calvin impressed on the people of Geneva, a very stringent moral system obtained from a literal reading of the Bible. These new impositions went through protestations as the people believed that they successfully dislodged the Papacy only to be disappointed by the experience of a similar form of the papacy with Calvin at the helm. Calvin's innovative political philosophy and social reforms had brought about a radical transformation in Europe. Zwingli, as compared Luther and Calvin who discussed various theologies in their writings and arguments, opted for a unified theme. Nevertheless, Zwingli tackled an analogous fundamental movement in the form of a very stringent Protestantism in which the Gospel was almost treated as a law (Bromiley 121). Zwingli's contribution to the social life of his generation cannot be discounted as his teachings became the foundation of social and organizational principles of the fundamentalist Protestants and the Puritans which later became the basis of the political and social structures of the English colonies in the United States. Zwingli's ideas were so pervasive that up until this day, the principles of a social organization still persist. Hence, Zwingli's reformation movement can be characterized as rather revolutionary and political as observed in his preoccupation with both clerical and secular politics (Bromiley 128).
